When design becomes more than a profession and evolves into a language of cultural diplomacy, this is the clearest reflection of Professor Pang-Soong Lin’s lifelong journey.

Last December, at the Golden Pin Design Award Ceremony, Pang-Soong Lin was presented with the Best Design Achievement Award, one of the highest honors in the design field. This recognition not only acknowledged his outstanding professional accomplishments, but also served as a comprehensive reflection on decades of dedication to design education, cultural discourse, and international engagement.

Yet this recognition did not stop there.
This year, Professor Lin was further appointed by Presidential Decree as Taiwan’s Ambassador-at-Large for Arts and Design. Moving from professional excellence to cultural diplomacy, this appointment represents more than a personal honor—it highlights the increasingly vital role that Taiwanese design plays on the global stage.

Throughout his career, Professor Lin has consistently stood at the intersection of design and society, shaping a design language for Taiwan that carries both cultural depth and international perspective. From introducing Corporate Identity System (CIS) concepts and building visual design theory, to expressing cultural consciousness through works such as My Taiwan, his practice demonstrates how design can respond to place, history, and Taiwan’s position in the world.

His influence extends equally into education and organizational leadership. Professor Lin previously served as the 23rd President of the China Industrial Design Association (CIDA), where he actively advanced professional design systems, strengthened dialogue among government, industry, and academia, and reinforced the public role of design within society and industry. Through association platforms, international competitions, and exchange programs, he has long supported younger generations of designers, encouraging them to engage with the world through a broader, more open perspective.

From receiving a lifetime achievement honor last year to assuming a role in cultural diplomacy this year—and when viewed alongside his sustained contributions to education, professional organizations, and international exchange—this progression is no coincidence. It is the natural outcome of a designer’s lifelong commitment.

By using design as a bridge—connecting generations, cultures, and nations—Professor Pang-Soong Lin’s achievements belong not only to him personally, but also to the collective strength and legacy of Taiwanese design.
